Background of the Study
Early marriage remains a contentious social issue with significant implications for the educational attainment of young girls. In Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State, traditional practices and socio-economic factors contribute to the prevalence of early marriage, which in turn affects girls’ access to education. Historically, early marriage was often culturally sanctioned and viewed as a means of securing economic stability or social alliances. However, contemporary research has shown that early marriage is closely linked to lower levels of educational attainment, reduced opportunities for personal development, and long-term socio-economic disadvantages (Okojie, 2023). In many cases, young girls who marry early are forced to leave school, limiting their chances for higher education and professional advancement. This study investigates the impact of early marriage on educational outcomes for young girls in Esan Central. It examines how early marriage disrupts the continuity of formal education, influences academic performance, and contributes to broader patterns of gender inequality. The research draws on both quantitative data and qualitative interviews with affected individuals, educators, and community leaders to provide a comprehensive assessment of the issue. Furthermore, the study considers how government policies, cultural norms, and community interventions can either mitigate or exacerbate the adverse effects of early marriage. The findings are expected to inform targeted strategies that promote educational retention and empowerment for young girls, thereby fostering long-term socio-economic development in the region (Okojie, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Early marriage in Esan Central presents a critical barrier to the educational advancement of young girls. Despite ongoing efforts to promote girl-child education, many girls are compelled to marry at a young age, resulting in premature school dropout and limited academic achievement (Okojie, 2023). This practice not only curtails educational opportunities but also perpetuates cycles of poverty and gender inequality. The loss of educational prospects adversely affects the future prospects of these girls, limiting their ability to secure gainful employment and contribute to community development. Moreover, early marriage often leads to early childbearing, which further diminishes educational and economic opportunities. The study aims to quantify the impact of early marriage on educational attainment and to explore the socio-cultural factors that perpetuate this practice. It also seeks to identify potential interventions that can help delay marriage and encourage continued education among young girls.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the impact of early marriage on the educational attainment of young girls.
To identify the socio-cultural factors that contribute to early marriage in Esan Central.
To propose strategies to enhance educational retention among young girls.
Research Questions:
How does early marriage affect the educational attainment of young girls in Esan Central?
What socio-cultural factors contribute to the prevalence of early marriage?
What interventions can promote continued education among young girls?
Research Hypotheses:
Early marriage negatively impacts the educational attainment of young girls.
Socio-cultural factors are significant determinants of early marriage practices.
Targeted interventions can improve educational retention among girls.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the detrimental effects of early marriage on the education of young girls in Esan Central. The findings will provide critical insights for policymakers, educators, and community organizations to develop targeted strategies that promote girl-child education and delay early marriage. Ultimately, the research aims to empower young girls and contribute to broader socio-economic development (Okojie, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the effect of early marriage on educational attainment among young girls in Esan Central. It focuses on local cultural and socio-economic factors, without addressing broader national trends.
Definitions of Terms:
